When he would return to civilization, he would go into the newspapers business, and be a successful writer; he would choose to be politically active just like his father and Mr. Kennedy would later become a candidate for the House of Representatives. From here on was the beginning and legacy of the famous John F. Kennedy. 1. The Dream How did one man create such a big difference? Look at the Presidents before Kennedy, the first President, George Washington, it was because of his actions and mindset that we out witted the British and became the independent country; President Lincoln who helped bring slavery to end, who brought the Confederacy and the States together; President Teddy Roosevelt who initiated the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act, which would prove very beneficial to the economy and its people. Now there are a ew other fine Presidents such as these listed few, but Kennedy is the first and only President to reach the impossible, to do the impossible, to even think about the impossible, have America walk on the moon. All due to his will to reach far beyond the sky and enter space itself to come across and walk upon the moon. B. Why it Matters NASA, (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) is responsible for the Space Program and Kennedy was the one responsible for Space Exploration. Apollo 11 was the manned spaceship which l anded on the moon, to achieve what Mr. Kennedy wanted to see and experience himself; to see his dreams come true. Unfortunately his untimely death singled-handedly shocked the people; his assassination would spark the will for Space Exploration to accomplish his dream of landing on the moon. II. Body Paragraphs a. How It All Began John Fitzgerald Kennedy, born May 29, 1917, at 83 Beals Street in the middle-class suburb of Brookline, Massachusetts, was the second of nine children (Baughman et. Al). The Kennedy bunch ended up moving to Bronxville, just outside of New York City. They would reside here for Kennedy’s schooling throughout the years until 1941 where they would dismantle and search for a new home. Kennedy had a secret illness which was life threatening: chronic stomach disorders, back problems, frequent and severe allergic reactions, and the undiagnosed, until 1947, effects of Addison’s disease. â€Å"Addison’s disease is a failure of the adrenal glands, which sapped his energy, weakened his immune system, and left him vulnerable to infections and dangerously high fevers† (Baughman et. Al). Kennedy’s father wouldn’t let his health affect the publicity so he covered it up with Kennedy’s â€Å"war injuries. 1. His Career In 1941, instead of continuing with his works, John F. Kennedy followed his brother Joseph Jr. into battle alongside the U. S Navy during World War II. Kennedy was assigned to duties of Naval Intelligence in Washington. On August 2nd, 1943, the PT-109, a boat under his command, was rammed and suck by a Japanese destroyer, Amagiri. Although his seamanship and commands were questionable at the time, he was still a courageous man; he proved this by saving his injured crew or being able to sustain them behind enemy lines to wait for rescue. Awarded a few medals such as the Navy and Marine Corps Medal and the Purple Heart, also being considered a hero in the eyes of New York Times, he would later be discharged for medical reasoning and thrown into politics right away by his father, due to his eldest sons death, Joseph Jr. now being able to fulfill his father’s dream; to become the first Irish-Catholic President of the United States. 2. Political Life In 1946 John Kennedy won election to the U. S. Congress from Massachusetts’ 11th District, representing parts of Boston and Cambridge. His father spent exorbitant sums on the campaign and involved the entire Kennedy family except his sister Rosemary who was ‘retarded’. In 1952, at his father’s urging, Kennedy challenged Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. for the U. S. Senate from Massachusetts. Most observers gave Kennedy little chance. The 1952 campaign featured sophisticated, often unique methods of reaching the voters. Among the first to make the best use of television for advertising and fundraising, Kennedy enrolled in a special CBS-TV seminar to promote on how to use TV effectively. His naturally poised and unrestrained manner fitted the new scene conditionally. â€Å"Highlighting the campaign were the appearances of the candidate’s mother and sisters at hundreds of invitation-only social events where the Kennedy women served tea and charmed an estimated 70,000 women voters. A record turnout gave Kennedy a slim 76,000 vote margin over Lodge† (Baughman et. Al). Kennedy attracted large support from Boston, Irish-Catholics, Jews, labor union members, and some Republicans who thought Kennedy was more conservative than Lodge. 3. JFK, How he Became President Mr. Kennedy did his best to become and persuade people for him to become Vice-President, as that proved to no avail, he went towards a more direct approach, becoming President himself. In order to get votes and win the nomination of running for his party, he had to persuade some hard-headed mules that Catholics are able to win votes as well. In doing so, he set off a campaign which would be a very rough one for him indeed, for he was matched against Nixon. Without his televised broadcast of him against Nixon, he would have probably lost the election of becoming President for the argins between the two men were ever so slightly apart. b. Introducing John F. Kennedy with the Space Program The Space Program would be introduced in 1946, not as NASA but its ancestor NACA. While they have been preparing themselves for space, they constructed with planes and aerodynamics. When Sputnik 1 was launched by the U. S. S. R a strike of fear and lack of knowledge devoured the United States especially t he government. In order to retaliate, they devoted their studies and enhanced science and math subjects in order to redeem themselves from this feat. On July 28, 1958, President Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act, which established NASA from there. NASA did not only evolve from its ancestor, but it absorbed everything from it. NASA took over and started its own missions on October 1st of the same year. When President Kennedy beat Eisenhower’s famous Nixon, he did his best to prove he was worthy of being U. S. A’s President. He worked with domestic and foreign affairs before heading into the Space Race. He knew the people of the United States needed to have the same confidence they once had before Sputnik 1 was launched. In order for this to occur, he went to Houston, Texas on September 12, 1962 to address the nation, that the Space Race must continue but needs the help of the government to help pay for the program (Logsdon). Before announcing this, on February 20, 1962 John Glenn was the first man to be launched and orbit around the Earth’s atmosphere. This is what sparked the hope of the Space Exploration to continue. With President Kennedy’s power of words and the hope NASA has instilled into the people’s hearts, it seemed anything was possible. Even through Kennedy’s assassination, the Space Program continued its works to accomplish Kennedy’s dream of landing on the moon. 4. Kennedy’s Assassination and the Moon It was 12:30 Friday afternoon, on November 22, 1963, in Dealey Plaza, Texas when four gunshots were heard across the globe. Kennedy was fatally shot and died the same day, he was assassinated and although it may have said Lee Harvey Oswald was responsible for Kennedy’s death, it is still a conspiracy on whether he did it and if he did if there were other people involved. This case is still an unraveled mystery which hasn’t been solved ever since. Kennedy’s death shocked the globe but that didn’t stop NASA from reaching the moon. His death may have been very mournful, but NASA was devoted into finishing this last project Kennedy sent them out to do and that was to reach the moon. Some years later on July 20, 1969, the Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin accomplished the amazing feat of being the first and only men to land on the moon. III. Conclusion John Fitzgerald Kennedy was a remarkable man capable of reaching the impossible. One of the youngest Presidents ever, and had the mind of the wisest. Without his leadership and devotion of accomplishing the race to the moon, we wouldn’t have had the same spark of hope as we do today. His actions have led us to a new age, one that will forever be remembered. Although the Space Race has led us far, we haven’t had the time and money to go back to the Moon. Mr. Kennedy is the hope of all dreams. He is the moon and will forever be walking on it, while he waits for our return. Disabled people live independently with the same independence just like the normal people stay with. According to Jill Weiss, it is not merely living alone but living independently with the same choices and preferences that the non disabled people live with. In independent living, people try to work out some other alternatives in life and work towards improvement of their self respect and determination, however proper support and assistance from friends and family is required for a successful and independent living. Patients whoever use the services of health and social care services become the users of health and social care service. Whenever you are sick, you visit your General Practitioner but health and social care services are merely not limited to your GP. Nowadays you can avail or use their services sitting at your home too. The devices are assembled according to its requirement. The patients can complete their job with the help of technology which is supportive. Technology like responsive can help them take care of the risks and technology like preventive help prevent risks and harmful situations. The assistive technology devices range from walking stick to different kinds of detectors. Some more examples of devices of assistive technology are Devices which help patients to remember what work they need to do. The doctor suggested her to use a keyboard which had larger letters marked in black and the background marked with yellow. To improve her lifestyle, she was given a dressing stick, large handled pots and jar openers. Her vehicle was fitted with a left foot accelerator and spinner knob to help her drive safely. A digital memory minder was given to her in order to help her remember and complete her task on time. 1.2 Some health care services have systems of AT in place but it is not effectively implemented. Although AT needs to be considered in all the health care units, but most of the staffs are unaware of the procedure of using tags. Lack of proper training, knowledge is one of the barriers of AT. Due to improper selection of the device, a mismatch is very likely to occur. Mismatch between the patient and the device results in frustration. It can be expensive and also wastage of time. People who suffer from various dilemmas might not find AT useful and effective. It is sometimes embarrassing for some people to use devices in front of the public. The keyboard that was chosen for her might not be the correct one to solve her problem. Also Sally might feel embarrassed to use a cane in front of public. A PDA can be very heavy to carry and also expensive. It might be difficult for her to get trained on new devices that were fitted in his vehicle. In order to overcome or reduce the barriers, the most important thing is to gather information on the devices of AT. Also if one can get support from different groups in using these devices can help reduce the barrier. Although it has huge potential to become helpful to people but it can also have negative effects if not used properly. We have understood that through Assistive Technology can provide independence and save the time of the family member or care givers but some negative aspects of AT is it disrupts privacy. A person with specific need is fully normal and they need complete support and care from the family members. when a persons mental abilities reduce, he or she is said to be suffering from a disease called dementia. First and foremost they start depending on someone as their mental health is not normal. So their need is to get support from a person who does not criticize them for their misdoings. Sometimes they are unable to express their views and opinions so one should be sensitive towards them and take care of empathically. If a person suffering from dementia is fond of going out, an individual should always assist him in his/her outings. They tend to forget simple things in life and with love and care they can be looked after. People should be very caring towards patients of dementia. Maggie is lady aged around 62 year old. She has been diagnosed with dementia. Maggies husband has died recently. She has the habit of going out and visiting different places throughout the day. On many occasions, she has failed to understand the difference between daytime and nighttime. On one occasion, she left her tap open which resulted in overflow of water (Piefke, 2007). Her daughter visited her once but could not find her at home. Her family is concerned about her forgetful nature and they feel that Maggies is at risk due to her forgetful nature. Maggies needs are to be recognized and taken care of. 3.2 Some assistive devices can be recommended for Maggie in order to let her live independently and without depending on her family. She is recommended to use devices like a sensor which helps to detect extreme temperature, gas or smoke. A mat put on bed which sends alarms when the person gets up from the bed at night. Another device which is whenever she gets up from bed or chair an alarm would ring. Electrical tags can be used. Hearing aids, dressing aids, walking canes can be recommended. To address her problem of keeping the tap open, a device that rings an alarm whenever any tap is kept open can be used. Since Maggie has the habit of leaving her home without informing anyone, locator devices can be used in order to find out her exact location. Calendar clocks can be used in case she cannot remember the day. 3.3. There are many benefits of assistive technology to health and social care organizations. First and foremost, with the help of these devices disabled people can live independently without any dependence on care givers or family members. There are various risks associated with the patients who suffer from dementia. Using the devices of assistive technology can help reduce the risks. If a person is dependent on devices of assistive technology, they dont need to pay a visit to hospital at an early age. The devices would help improve the memory of the patients. The patients who suffer from dementia are prone to suffer from stress and they tend to get exhausted easily. The devices can be a relief to them and also to their family members. A person suffering from dementia can use a hand held digital assistant can help him improve his memory. This device helps him remind what work to do next (Ravenscroft, 2002). This will help him to complete his work on time and thus he will remember to complete the important tasks throughout the day. The device is very costly and might be difficult to acquire it. Locator devices can help people locate in case they are lost. Sometimes some devices of assistive technology may disrupt the privacy of the individual. A walking cane might not be helpful for her as she is a very active lady. A computer device might not be helpful for her as she is old enough and does not go to office. Dementia is a disease of declining memory capabilities. The mental condition of an individual gradually declines as the illness advances (Ratcliffe, 2008). Maggie is at the early onset of the disease. She has been recommended to be put on different devices which may be helpful to him in the initial stages. She has the habit of going out of home and she cannot distinguish between day and night. But as the disease will advance, she might carry the locator device that will help find her location even if being used to it from the onset of the disease. Another device called the PDA has been recommended for her. With the advancement of the disease, she might forget to carry it in her pocket and thus the device might not be useful to her anymore. John Wilkes Booth and his group of co-conspirators developed plans in the late summer of 1864 to only kidnap the President and take him the Confederate capital of Richmond and hold him in return for Confederate prisoners of war. The political theory around this piece can be described as volatile in the sense that it assumes to the reader that a war is about to happen. I believe he is hinting towards the fact that I think he knows people are following him to retreave the prisoner. The psychological impact involved in Darus isolation was that he was caught up between the legal system that imposed itself on the Arabs family quarrel and his emotions to do right as a man. When Daru said every bit of this disgusts me, and first of all your fellow here. I believe he was fighting with his inner morals which to him were to do the right thing and to not turn the Arab over but in turn, set him free. He doesnt have any problem with his choice in refusing to turn him over and firmly stands by his decision. Instead of taking the prisoner off and setting him free, he wished that the Arab would just run away that way he would be alone with no decision to make. The statement that mans stupid crime revolted him, but to hand him over was contrary to honor supports this entirely. The statement, he could see nothing but the dark yet shining eyes and the animal mouth, in my opinion means that he didnt see the prisoner as a monster or a killer but just as a normal person incapable of murdering another human being. I believe that when Daru was feeding the prisoner and treating him like an actual human being the Arab developed some sort of Stockholm syndrome while in the custody of someone who I believe he grew to trust in a short amount of time. I think that when the prisoner asked Daru if he would come with them to the prison, he knew that his fellow Arabs were following him to get him back. I believe he was trying to protect Daru from what was going to happen. When Daru was walking the Arab south to the nomads where he would be safe, his heart grew heavy and I honestly dont think that Daru wanted him to leave since they formed a very strange and mysterious bond among men. When Daru returned to find the message you handed over our brother. You will pay for this. written on his black board I believe he was unsure why they would be after him considering that he just let their brother go, not only with food but also with money. He finds himself felling misunders tood and what I believe is frightended when he dosent see anyone in sight. The psychological impact in my opinion is greater on the concept of isolation more so than the political theory involed with the character and his struggles. I think the author did a good job dehumanizing the prisoner in an attempt to make Daru seem like he is still alone although someone is there. The imagery and detail also given make it easy to visualize just how alone and torn Daru actually is. I believe that the storys title should be changed from The Guest to The Unseen Guest just to make it play a little more to the psychological aspect of the piece. (words: 1024)

Curley is the son of the ranch boss. He is portrayed as a small, semi-privileged man with a very short temper and something of an inferiority complex. He is always itching for a scuffle and is constantly seeking the opportunity to prove himself on the ranch among other bigger, â€Å"better† men. From the moment we are introduced to Curley we discover this, due to the way in which he acts when he meets George and Lennie, â€Å"His eyes passed over the new men and he stopped. He glanced coldly at George and then at Lennie. His arms gradually bent at the elbows and his hands closed into fists. He stiffened and went into a slight crouch. † This illustrates that he is not mentally secure about himself, and quickly goes into a poised posture as if he is willing to lash out on the two new men to prove his manliness and authority. After a deliberately elongated stare down, Curley speaks but in short menacing sentences. â€Å"You the new guys the old man was waitin’ for? And when George is the only one to reply he quickly retorts in a provocative manner â€Å"Let the big guy talk† Once again this justifies the fact that Curley is insecure and is always trying to prove himself as the alpha male on the ranch, so he tries doing so by badmouthing Lennie as he feels that by doing so he will be regarded as strong, manly and valiant. When Lennie refuses to speak the situation hastily increase due to Curley’s short temper. Unlike most other characters in the story Curley is probably the only one that does not develop much over the course of the book but he stands out as a character with whom the author simply does not sympathize. While everyone else is struggling, Curley’s busy picking fights and trying to throw his weight around his dad’s ranch. He seems outside of the economic struggle and even the personal struggle of the Depression. Curley’s the kind of jerk you need in contrast to the other characters, so he maintains this â€Å"bad† reputation with the reader from the beginning right to the end. The next encounter with Curley is in chapter 3 when all the men are in the bunkhouse. Curley is clearly frustrated and agitated by the fact that he can’t find his wife, a sign of weakness and lack of authority, and when he is told that Slim is at the barn he rushes out and starts interrogating him but when Slim shows that he is in control, Curley’s fake ego is quickly shattered and it is obvious that he is quickly forced back into his place. â€Å"Well, I didn’t mean nothing, Slim. I just ast you. † But Curley being the short fused jerk hat he is could not just leave it there and in a matter of seconds he is all up on Lennie punching him in the face. He did this because he evidently lost the argument with Slim and knowing Lennie’s friendly, unaggressive nature finds him the best solution to blow of some steam, as well as prove his dominance by overpowering a huge, defenseless man. But once Lennie retaliates and breaks Curley’s puny hand he finally realizes that he has lost twice and he should just leave it there. Our final encounter with Curley is when his wife is killed by Lennie. It is apparent that he does not care about the death of his wife and is simply too absorbed into his own world were only he and his reputation matter. â€Å"Curley- maybe you better stay here with your wife† â€Å"I’m goin, I’m gonna shoot the guts out of the big bastard myself† This shows that the death of his wife is not very significant, but gaining fame and revenge by shooting the man that killed her would seem far more favorable, it would certainly be more manly than staying back and weeping over a dead female.

Among many of the ethnic groups that experienced a combination of segregation, racism, and prejudice; African Americans is one of the few that is still faced with one or more forms of discrimination today. The majority of African Americans came to the United States from Africa to be slaves, while others are citizens or residents of the United States from partial ancestry a form of the native population. In 1619, the first recorded Africans were recorded in British North America in Jamestown, Virginia, and the numbers began to increase as more English settlers died from harsh conditions and the Africans were brought to work as laborers. In the late 1700s the American Revolution occurred, which landed approximately 3 million Africans in slavery in the United States by the mid-1800s, (Centerwall, Brandon, 1984). In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln declared that all slaves in the United States from a Union were free. Meanwhile the declaration of Africans being free from slavery was joyful event, it was also the beginning of a growing battle that lead to a different approach of discrimination including; segregation, prejudice, and racism. By the 1900s, the African American population increased, which majority of the population lived in the Southern states of the United States. The Southern states enforced the Jim Crow laws, which mandated racial segregation in all public facilities giving white Americans advantages over black Americans in public schools, public transportation, restrooms, restaurants and drinking fountains. In order to eliminate the control that white Americans had over African Americans, African Americans began to build their own schools, churches, and communities. Although, African Americans building their own communities was the intention of avoiding the humiliation of the Jim Crow laws, it still didn’t prevent the African Americans from becoming victims of racially motivated violence. African Americans experienced countless acts of violence incidents that lead blacks battered, beaten and even dead in some cases. White Americans begin to form organizations that promoted white power, leading the organizations to practice out violence and destroy African Americans property. A popular white power organization called themselves the Ku Klux Klan and performed acts against blacks that included; lynching cross burnings, physical violence, and house burnings towards African Americans. Although, the Ku Klux Klan was formed in 1867, it has been rumors that there are people that are still secretly members today. African Americans experienced a wider range of discrimination, segregation, and racism more so in the later days but still arise in society today. In a perfect world, no one would be judged by the color of their skin and society would focus on a person’s individual true character. Often times African Americans miss out on opportunities because they are being judged by the color of their skin, rather than their abilities. The United States has tried to provide Americans the rights to equal opportunity, by creating the Affirmative action. The affirmative action eliminates people being granted opportunities based on their race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation or national origin and ensures that minority groups within a society receive equal opportunities. Although, the affirmative action was intended to diminish situations which cause people to participate in different forms of discrimination, but unless it could be fully proven that African Americans were being passed up for jobs, education, income and other forms of advancements there will never be a way to fully prohibit this form of discrimination. Today, there is still unequal opportunities and discriminatory treatment that occurs in the United States especially with African Americans. African Americans were affected by many forms of discrimination that decreased advancement to equal other races in society. They were faced with dual labor market, forcing blacks to work in lower labor market areas. Redlining was enforced by keeping businesses from helping African Americans simply because of the area they lived in. Many African Americans wanted to better themselves by furthering their education, but suffered from institutional discrimination and given less information and aid for education. Knowing the history of the African American struggles on; prejudice, discrimination, and segregation allows me to understand my roots and accomplishments of my ethnic group. Personally the history of African Americans affects me greatly, because it is the combination of struggles that has played a huge role to my advancements and opportunities performed daily. The African American ancestors fought daily through all counts of discrimination helps that allows all groups of different minority groups the same equal rights for advancement opportunities. Although, the majority of the world views of African Americans has changed there are still people that choose to discriminate against African Americans by choosing not to change with the ways of the world and maintain prejudice. Acts of discrimination is performed but not as greatly as many years ago. African American culture has had a rough past journey, but in the long run the majority of the United States has made it possible for all African Americans equal rights and opportunities in life.
